A message from our lovely librarian
A message about Third Grade Library…
Welcome to 3rd grade at Creative Science School! Below you will find useful information regarding the CSS library.
Allison’s class will visit the library on Tuesday mornings from 9:40-10:25. Students can check out two books at a time. They can keep their books for two weeks and items can be renewed. Third graders will check out for the first time this school year during their first library class.
There is a CSS library website that you can visit for all kinds of information on events, hours and checkout procedures, what students are learning in library, Oregon Battle of the Books, and much more. I just created this summer so it is still a work in progress, but it contains a lot of information that you will find useful. Something I plan on adding as we move through the year are pictures of what students are doing when they come to the library. Please check out the site and save the URL for future reference.
If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, look no further than the library. I will need help with a variety of Book Fair tasks, OBOB, and shelving books. Please send me an email requesting further information if you are interested in volunteering.
My hope is that your child is excited to come to the library each week, and that their love of literature and thirst for knowledge grows because of their experiences here. If you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me at mkleiner@pps.net or call me at 503-916-6431.
I look forward to working and learning with your student!
Sincerely,
Maria Kleiner

Reminder for the last 2 days
Hey guys just a reminder for the last couple of days
- Culmination is tomorrow at Mt. Tabor at 1:15. Kids will need a sack lunch because we will not be back at CSS for lunch. See the Culmination Post for all the details. It is pretty low key. If you are feeling stretched too thin at the end of this year they will be bringing their paper home and can show you there. You guys can have your own toast at home. Some kids have been asking is it a potluck, nope it’s not. We only have cider at this one.
- Last day of school. On the last day of school we have a pretty typical CSS last day of school. In the morning we will gather to watch a slide show. Unfortunately parents are not invited because we have grown so big we barely fit in the cafeteria ourselves. Then we will go through the halls to get people to sign yearbooks. If you haven’t bought a yearbook they are for sale after school until they sell out. If the kids don’t have a yearbook they will get a little paper autograph book to have people sign. Then we will head back to our rooms for a bit and then meet again on the playground/field for a picnic. You are welcome to come to the picnic if you want. You will find us near the big tree. Then we are headed back to the classroom to finish up our stuff and at 2:40 we are clapping our 8th graders out of the building. Then, you have 4th graders!
Culmination
Where: Mt. Tabor Amphitheater
When 1:15 pm
What: We will be toasting to our hard work and great year and we will be reading our paper. They will be bringing the paper home that day. If you want to take your child home from the culmination you are welcome
Our culmination is planned for Wednesday June 8th at Mt. Tabor. There is a picnic area and amphitheater next to the bathrooms and basketball courts. I have attached a map with a big check mark where we are going to be. Honestly you guys know better than I since most of you are from this neighborhood.
The hiccup in our plan…Since there were extra days added on to the school year our field trip to Mt. Tabor falls on a day where the park is closed to cars. That means that you have to park in the neighborhood and walk up. It worked out fine last year. On the map I have indicated the best area to park and then walk up.
Thanks!
Thank You
Hey,
I have so many Thank You’s to hand out this week, I’ll try and keep it short enough for you to read it 😉
- For all the volunteers who came with us on the Portland trip, THANK YOU so much. We trekked nearly 9 miles all over the city (we have a Max shut down to thank for that) But it was a great day. We ate lunch at Pioneer square and my parents were thrilled to see us on the news. What a day, and I wouldn’t be able to do something so totally crazy if parents didn’t want to come along so a big thanks to you guys.
- Teacher appreciation week was wonderful. The flowers were beautiful and I totally forgot all about the beverage day and I was grumpy about not having anything when BOOM there was tea waiting for me. It was the best and I thank you so much.
I have put up a 2nd post with the homework all attached. It is the Homework post and you will be able to click back to it at any time to get the organizers or the directions.
Homework
Week 3 Directions (Keep in mind this one is a half sheet so this page has the directions written twice on it)
No Week 3 Organizer because it is a poster

One week
3rd Grade Storyline Culmination Invitation
Ok super short for the week before spring break.
1. Our culmination is this Friday at 1:30. I sent home an invitation with your kiddo but I will attach it here when I get back to school on Monday.
2. Some pretty exciting news. We spent our $600 winnings. We had talked about the Willamette river tours but it turned out it would be over $700 for 2 hours! So we went a more long lasting route and we bought 6 chrome books and a printer to build a publishing station for 3rd grade. They are very excited.
3. In the first week back from break I will write a field trip post asking for volunteers. Some trips have a limited number of volunteers and other trips we can take everyone if they want to go.
Yay spring!
Allison
Culmination Date
Happy Spring,
Just a few things for the good of the order.
- This week is project 2nd wind. It is a food drive through Oregon Food Bank that collects food specifically at this time of the year because they are not all out of their holiday donations. Our class is teamed up with our buddies and we set a goal of 400lbs of food.
- We are in a spelling contest this Friday. It is a district wide event and we will be participating as a class. This was not a mandatory event so some people chose not to participate. I have given them a list of words to study and you can click below to see it. Spelling Contest Practice – Google Docs
- Ugh politics! Will you have a talk with your kiddos about not talking politics at school. While most of us share similar views, they are not everyone’s view point and there is no way for 3rd graders to discuss it without fighting about it. Come to think of it, it seems like there is no way for adults to discuss it without fighting about it.
- Brandi and I have set a culmination date. Friday, March 18th at 1:30. We will all meet together in the cafeteria, share some foods (more on that in a minute) watch the arrival and then head back to our classroom to go through our stuff. If you want to take your child home after that you are more than welcome.
-For this culmination we ask students to bring something to share from their own family background. We recognize that some families are deeply connected with their own history and some families are not. We also recognize that some families have more time than others. A sheet will be sent home with students that will indicate what they want to bring to the culmination. You may be super into Great Aunt May’s chocolate chip cookie recipe or you may be a chips and salsa kind of family. We just ask that you contribute something that means something to your family. It does not need to be a crazy amount of work for moms or dads.
Valentine’s Day
Hey guys,
Valentine’s Day is coming up next week and I allow you to put in your valentines whatever you choose. We will have a little “party” decorate bags and exchange valentines. You should feel no pressure to make or buy valentines. It works well to just bring blank valentines. But if your kiddo is super interested in writing names on them here is the list.
Abby, Allen, Avery, Bridget, Carson, Cody, Ethan, Gabe, Halle, Hannah, Hugo, Isha, Jack M, Jack N, Lucy H, Lucy W, Lilly, Mara, Mateo, Murphy, Nikita, Oli, Oona, Penny, Ruby, Shane, Sage, Terin, Westyn, Xander
Also we have started lunch duty. They have been amazing. They have great attitudes about helping out. Not all jobs in the kitchen are super exciting but they have treated each one with the same level of enthusiasm. I appreciate it as does Patty.
