Culmination Date

Posted on

Happy Spring,

Just a few things for the good of the order.

  1.  This week is project 2nd wind.  It is a food drive through Oregon Food Bank that collects food specifically at this time of the year because they are not all out of their holiday donations.  Our class is teamed up with our buddies and we set a goal of 400lbs of food.
  2. We are in a spelling contest this Friday.  It is a district wide event and we will be participating as a class.  This was not a mandatory event so some people chose not to participate.  I have given them a list of words to study and you can click below to see it.  Spelling Contest Practice – Google Docs
  3. Ugh politics!  Will you have a talk with your kiddos about not talking politics at school.  While most of us share similar views, they are not everyone’s view point and there is no way for 3rd graders to discuss it without fighting about it.  Come to think of it, it seems like there is no way for adults to discuss it without fighting about it.
  4. Brandi and I have set a culmination date.  Friday, March 18th at 1:30.  We will all meet together in the cafeteria, share some foods (more on that in a minute) watch the arrival and then head back to our classroom to go through our stuff.  If you want to take your child home after that you are more than welcome.

-For this culmination we ask students to bring something to share from their own family background.  We recognize that some families are deeply connected with their own history and some families are not.  We also recognize that some families have more time than others.  A sheet will be sent home with students that will indicate what they want to bring to the culmination.  You may be super into Great Aunt May’s chocolate chip cookie recipe or you may be a chips and salsa kind of family.  We just ask that you contribute something that means something to your family.  It does not need to be a crazy amount of work for moms or dads.

Thank you for the info! I assume the spelling bee is at CSS? Also, can you explain more about what a “culmination” is? I don’t think I’ve heard of that before. 🙂

The spelling contest will be in our class. They won’t have to spell out loud. They will just have to write them. Culmination is the ending of our storyline. In 2nd grade when the astronauts came back from the moon and you met in the cafeteria, that was culmination. A celebration of our learning.

Thank you! Also, I asked Avery tonight about kids talking about politics (because I thought that was odd that 8/9 year olds would have anything at all to say about that), and she was completely befuddled. She had no idea what that meant. Can you be more specific? I had a hard time even explaining the concept to her and I can’t imagine other kids even caring.

Well, some kids are more interested than others for sure. It is all over TV and radio and some kids want to talk about it. Just remind them that people have different opinions and that we should respect those opinions. In this situation we are just going to agree to disagree. Believe it or not it has come up about a dozen times over the past couple of weeks. It happens every elections cycle. Thanks for posting in the comments so other people can get the answers too
